Religion Culture Islamic Fundamentalism

In Afghanistan, the Taliban government is guided by a strict fundamentalist interpretation of Islam. The Taliban trace their roots to a particular branch of the religion called Deobandi Islam based in northern India. Deobandi Muslims have been living in India largely peacefully for more than a century, however. They say the Taliban have adopted a more radical brand of Islam, and they claim to have no ties to the group. For the Deobandi, the comparison with the Taliban threatens their own security in India. Listen to learn more about the Deobandi Muslim roots of Taliban ideology.
