China is currently the United States’ biggest source of imports and one of its top export markets. President Trump has promised to enforce U.S. trade laws and agreements and promote free and fair trade with China. President Trump recently met with China’s president, Xi Jinping, to discuss trade practices. But the trade relationship is still shaky. Another focus in the relationship with China is the rapid increase of Chinese investment in U.S. start up companies. As a part of his campaign promise to re-evaluate America’s free trade commitments, President Trump is pulling the United States out of a negotiated but not ratified agreement, the Trans-Pacific Partnership, or TPP. Trump promised on the campaign trail to withdraw from the TPP. He is also expected to renegotiate NAFTA, the North American Free Trade Agreement. There is a currently a surplus of cheese and dairy products in the United States, and it’s a global phenomenon. Two years ago, dairy farmers expanded production due to the high demand in China and Russia. After a sudden drop in demand, there is a surplus of 1.3 billion pounds of cheese in storage. The U.S. government is helping these dairy farms by buying some of the extra cheese and giving it to food banks. Dairy farmers will get some relief from falling prices and food banks will be able to give more cheese away. Listen to hear more about this huge surplus of cheese.

President Obama visited Vietnam recently, making him only the third U.S. President to visit this country. The Vietnam War ended in 1975 when the U.S. withdrew combat forces and the country was united under communism. For the last 50 years the U.S. has banned weapons sales to the communist government. Obama ended that ban in Vietnam because as China becomes aggressive in the Western Pacific, the United States wants to strengthening its ties to Vietnam. China and Vietnam are neighbors and share Communist ideology. Listen to hear more about this new policy.
