Headscarf Debate in Canada

The laws of Canada support the freedom of religious expression. However recently, a woman who was going to become a Canadian citizen was is required to remove her face veil during the public citizenship ceremony. This Muslim woman challenged that requirement. She says she has no problem removing her veil, or niqab, in private to verify her identity but she considers it her religious duty to wear a veil in public. Some conservative politicians are paying a lot of attention to this issue and have discussed banning the niqab for all civil servants. Listen to hear several points of view on this controversy around religious expression.

Update: Since this story aired, Canada's Liberal Party won the election and Justin Trudeau will be the new Prime Minister.
